The Bucket List

This chugs along fine enough to start with as a slightly awkward (‘cos the stars are Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson) old folks romp. It’s good to see Sean Hayes in a role slightly different from what I’ve seen him in before, too. When the bulk of the movie kicks in however, it’s hard not to disconnect. Visual effects are employed to show many of the life-affirming activities (taken straight from the “things to do before you die” book), and in most cases they are truly appalling. I haven’t seen Wild Hogs, but while this kind of makes itself clearer in its closing scenes, and yes, it slightly moved me, I really can’t imagine there’s much to separate the two. Which might mean that these movies just aren’t for me, but I really think it just means that the only reason this is getting positive attention is because of the leads. If Nicholson and/or Freeman get Oscar nods next year as I’ve heard they might, then there really is something rotten in Hollywood. And I guess I even knew that already.
