Christmas for Everyone – St. Winifred’s School Choir Christmas for Everyone – St. Winifred’s School Choir

December 12th, 2005 by surlaroute

I mentioned this one in the review of “The McGarrigle Christmas Hour” so I thought I’d write a little about it. It may just be a totally personal thing since I don’t have a Christmas in my memory when we didn’t have this record playing in the house, but to me this album is as essential to Christmas as the tree and everything. It’s a real shame it’s not widely available anymore (and to be honest, I don’t know if it ever was – I have no idea where we got our copy) – at the time of writing, I can find just one copy on eBay.

Even putting aside the collective voices of the girls, which for me at least is always gonna be disarming (though some of the solos here I think will never be matched for the cute factor), the arrangements and production of the tracks here always makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. They even have coconut shells on “Little Donkey” and a bone fide recorder in “Away in a Manger”, what more could you ask for!? I plan to put a Christmas playlist on my radio thing before Christmas, and I’ll probably throw one of these tracks into the mix. I’m almost tempted to stick the whole thing up on Christmas Day or something unless someone wants to object, lol.

Yes please put the whole thing on…it is a family favourite for us also and our copy has been lost!! Would be much appreciated!

  • Jeanie

We have this on vinyl but I would really like it on CD. How could I get a copy?

I don’t think it’s on CD … my copy’s a digital recording of the old vinyl, I’ve been meaning to burn it to a CD for ages but I keep thinking I might try starting from scratch again and really spend some time cleaning up the hiss and crackle etc. Given its seemingly astonishing unpopularity, its age, and its obscurity, I don’t know … would I be in trouble to say stay in touch and I’ll send you a copy when I get round to doing all that? lol. Don’t get excited though, it could take ages … as a rule I only go near it in the month of December :)

Ah I almost forgot, too … in the meantime there’s this (but don’t ask me to seed again, I don’t think I have the files anymore, looks like someone’s seeding right now though)

  • Helena

Casper, if you are able to copy it could I be really cheeky and ask for one as well? I’ve been looking for this for years and have had no luck. It’s our favourite Christmas tape but has worn out from over use! Where did you find the digital recording?

  • Su Scattergood

In the 80’s I bought the record of St Winnifreds school choir singing carols, called Christmas for everyone. Unfortunately I lent it to someone, and never got it back. I loved this record, and would love to get another copy, although now I would prefer a cd copy of it. Is there anywhere I can purchase or get it from please?

    Caspar

Have you been able to burn a CD since your last comment? We have an old vinyl record that is not in too good a condition….

  • Danielle

If anyone has managed to get this on CD, or knows where to get it from, PLEASE let me know. I used to have this on tape as a little girl & listened to it so much over the years it wore out. I would love to own it again, especially as I have my own family now :-)

  • Stockportboy

I sang on this record as a boy…my sister was also on it….I’d also love it on CD.

  • karen

I was priviaged to compose the song “In a lowly stable” for St Winifreds who included it on the “Christmas for everyone” album—-I also wrote There’ no one quite like Grandma for the choir

  • Oscar

Gordon congratulations. That is one of the greatest Christmas albums ever…reminded me of my School days in a Zimbabwe School Choir when I was a little kid about 25 years back…PLEASE try and find out where we can get a cd copy of the album, or if we can buy/ download from any web page? Doesn´t the School sell it? Maybe through their web page? Thanks so much…

Have just found our vinyl record of ‘Christmas for Everyone’, which was a very loved record when my children were growing up, it was on every Christmas. It was going to be taken to the charity shop, but after reading all the comments on your page, I think I will play it this Christmas to my grand daughters.

I have a digital recording as above (Pablo). Unfortunanely the volume has to be turned up quite high to hear it. It was always our favourite and the LP was quite scratched, but now we are delighted. Happy to share, but it is just over 35Mb though. Any suggestions ?
    Happy Christmas :)

Hello ! I ve also tried to find the album, cassette or cd to possibly this collection; and i have had no luck but you. Could you tell me the name of the album/collection; where i can find a copy; or if i could still buy one.

My dad came back one day and gave it to me and my younger sisters, and we automatically fell in love with it, thinking that it would be there for ever.

Its got tracks as u mentioned…………. little donkey; Christmas for every one (under the Christmas tree are presents for you and me); etc.

i would be grateful to get a response from you.

Hi I’m a little late replying to this (again) but I noticed the whole album is now up on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVshVi2ANFM It’s been there awhile now so doesn’t look like anybody’s objecting :)
