Zulu

Zulu

It’s another of my nightmare Sunday movie mechanic movie prejudice encountering sessions (it’s a trilogy: this, The Great Escape and The Magnificent Seven... shudder). I’ve forever hated this movie without properly watching it, whilst forever loving the John Barry theme tune.

This one actually turns out to be the best of my most feared movies. Right at the point when war officially breaks out and the missionary and his daughter have to flee and John Barry’s music kicks in, I knew it was alright.

It’s still no excuse for those people who declare it the greatest movie ever made (because it’s the oldest movie they’ve ever seen and the theme tune’s good… sorry), but it’s surprisingly good.

While I’m being incredibly shallow-minded (I don’t do it often, I promise), I’m going to refer to the documentary on the DVD, where some person involved with the movie talks about how proud she is of the movie being on TV every Christmas and stuff. This is what really bugs me about these movies. People associate them with Christmas and Christmassy feelings. “Christmas isn’t Christmas without Zulu,” etc. It’s the reason I took years to come round to liking James Bond (I still have issues with the old ones). I’d be hella depressed if I made a movie and it wound up only being famous for being played on TV every Christmas. It just completely insults the movie and what it stands for lol. I can’t even expand on that, it bugs the hell out of me. Good movie though, and nice DVD, it’s always great when they find someone involved to record a commentary on a movie so old.
