Walk the Line

Walk the Line 4 star

There’s not a lot to separate Johnny Cash’s story from just about any other big-time musician’s story – Ray Charles, Woody Guthrie, Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, you name ‘em – the humble beginnings, the fame, the drugs, the family falling apart, it’s all here and pretty conventionally told. But it’s pulled along by the two great central performances by Joaquin Phoenix and, I’ll admit it, Reese Witherspoon, which, while I still don’t think are as earthshattering as some do, are certainly the best work both actors have ever done and take their place alongside the great portrayals of real people, like Val Kilmer’s Jim Morrisson, Geoffrey Rush’s David Helfgott, Jamie Foxx’s Ray Charles, etc. I loved the proposal scene.
