I expected to like this but I really couldn’t have anticipated quite how much I would. The movie delivers the humour I expected from Peter O’Toole, Leslie Philips and Richard Griffiths simply being in a room together in a movie where f-bombs are more than permitted; but I didn’t expect the sweetness, the sheer beauty, of the relationship between O’Toole and northern lass Jodie Whittaker, and the drama that develops in the second half of the movie. I’ve recently said a few times how I wish Peter O’Toole could win just one acting award over Forest Whitaker, and every time I said it I realised how futile a wish is was; but now I’ve actually seen both performances, I’m rooting for him this Sunday now more than ever. I don’t think any 2006 movie made me laugh and cry so much as this one did. Oh, and Vanessa Redgrave is incredible too, particularly in the last scene which hypnotised me completely. Multiple viewings for this one in the future for sure.
