United 93

United 93 4 star

I guess I should’ve known what to expect from myself watching this movie. Just the noises of 9/11 over a black screen in Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 made me feel rotten, almost sick even. This movie is a relentless replaying and reminder of how that morning felt: both outside the situation – as most of us were, that gradual dawning from, “is this for real?” to speechlessness – and, more gut-wrenchingly, inside.

It’s a brilliant piece of work, but I doubt I’ll ever be watching it again. This is so bad, I know, but I didn’t know a whole lot about this flight (in fact, I’d kinda even forgotten about the Pentagon one, I guess the towers part overwhelmed my memory) – I didn’t even know if people survived or not, which made the movie, especially the ending, even worse for me. But the acting, the camerawork, the editing, sound mix, and what little music there is, make this an enthralling but emotionally exhausting experience.

[...] As with United 93, though I guess I can be more easily forgiven here, I didn’t know the outcome of this story – I didn’t know the story at all, in fact – so the ending of the movie kinda hit me surprisingly hard. James Horner’s cookie-cutter (albeit, gotta admit, still pretty gorgeous) score and the ever-so-slightly similar storyline (well, man vs. nature ) had me comparing it in my mind to Apollo 13 and I really wanted the guys to come home – most of all I wanted to see a cute reunion between Irene and Bugsy who had barely begun fallen in love before the boat left (“I wish it was night so I could say, ‘goodnight Irene,’”). As it is, this is a well put together drama with some flawless visual effects and a great cast, particularly the women – Diane Lane, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Cherry Jones, Rusty Schwimmer and Karen Allen, all of whom are given surprisingly strong, well-written roles in a movie you’d expect to be all about the guys. It makes the ending all the more powerful that we get to know the people who survived the storm too. [...]
