Two Thousand Maniacs!
Now this is more like it … it’s movies like this that really make me realise I’ve only touched the tip of the horror genre. That this movie was made before the great Seventies wave of gore fests is surprising – that it came before even George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead is practically a revelation. In the light of what followed, this of course looks shaky in places – but as a bridge between two worlds of horror, it’s an indispensable addition to any horror collection, and the gore is incredible. The set-up, setting and timing of the whole thing make it far from brainless, too. I haven’t seen the rest of the “Blood Trilogy” (comprising this, Blood Feast and Color Me Blood Red) as it’s called … but I look forward to it
In the meantime, I recommend a double bill with either Ravenous or The Wicker Man (original, of course).
