Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story

Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story 4 star

I’ve been wondering every time I see this one in my collection why I never seem to get around to watching it, and now I realise exactly why: I really have no idea what to write about it. I haven’t read “Tristram Shandy” – had never even heard of it before this movie came about – and I don’t know if I’m any wiser about it having watched this “adaptation” of it, but my curiosity has certainly been piqued … I mean, how could it not be with the likes of Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, Dylan Moran, David Walliams, Gillian Anderson, Stephen Fry … well, the cast list is endless. There are literally handfuls of laughs and a few rather startling shocks too, and I think I’ll definitely be watching it again. DVD could be an idea too … for the “footnotes”. To be honest, it’s worth watching for Steve Coogan’s hot chestnut scene alone, lol.

If you get the chance, the DVD extras are fun too. I’m particularly fond of Coogan’s commentaries… when he bothers to show up for them (case in point: Knowing Me, Knowing You).

Just to update here … I rented the DVD … and there were no extras!!! >:o Don’t quite know how that happened. It seems the price is down to £5 in most places now though, so I guess I’ll just buy it eventually :) Seems so dumb to even release a vanilla disc when even the movie itself mentions the extras, lol.
