If anything, in its first half, this movie feels a little too ‘alternative’ to me. Practically every character you meet is some kind of contentious issue personified, some kind of oddball or other. When Huffman’s character takes her son home to her parents, her family, the whole situation, feels as bizarre as Jane Campion’s Sweetie (or my memory of that movie, it’s a long time since I saw it but it came to mind I guess – ‘most disfunctional family ever’ is how I’d describe it). I think I expected a ‘straighter’ approach to transexualism, for want of a better word lol, if that’s possible – I think that would certainly be a tougher sell than the comedy-laden story here. It does go deeper into drama zone towards the end and it’s there that Huffmann’s performance really wows me. Having seen all the nominees for Best Actress except Keira Knightley now, notwithstanding possible surprise of the century when I see Pride and Prejudice (I personally just don’t get excited about Jane Austen, and even disregarding that little prejudice, it just doesn’t look like much to be proud of …. sh*t, I should’ve saved that for my review LOL), my vote (sigh if I had one) is with Huffman.
