Torch Song Trilogy

Torch Song Trilogy 5 star

I’ve gotta admit, I started to watch this about a month ago and I turned it off halfway and went to sleep. Putting it on today I was kind of worried, ‘cos I loved it so much the first time I saw it and it’s always sad to suddenly find out a movie’s not quite as good as you remember. I stuck with it till the end this time, though, and thank god I did. This movie is very over the top in places, very unrealistic in others. But Harvey Fierstein and Anne Bancroft’s performances are raw and real as hell and it’s towards the end when they’re thrown together and forced to confront each other’s issues that the movie becomes that unforgettable thing I fell in love with in the first place. It actually reminds me a lot of Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullmann in Autumn Sonata, only there’s some brilliantly funny humour here as well. The final shot of Fierstein gathering his token possessions from the people he’s loved in his lap is so beautiful – it just says everything there is to be said about how much a person can mean to a person.

Wonderful movie for so many reasons, but Harvey Firestein’s confrontation with Anne Bancroft (his mother) in the third act should be compulsory viewing for all parents.
