[...] I’m sure my opinion will lose a lot of respect when I say this (lol like it has a lot to lose) ... but this is now one of my ten favourite movies ever, and it damn near tops the bunch. There’s just so much in this movie that hits me in the places I want movies to hit me. The Dakota tea-cup ride scenes hit me in a really personal place so hard, that look on her face that’s just like, typical, one week early to ride, pulling the glasses down over her eyes so Brittany Murphy can’t see her tearing up; and later when they finally ride it, both of them working out years of frustration on the wheel and each other; and like, I guess I can’t deny that where I am in life right now makes the whole “grow up” theme resonate deeper too, Murphy’s response to somebody telling her, “But this isn’t you!” – “I can’t afford ‘me’ anymore …”.
[...] There’s just too much here for me to even know where to start writing so I’ll just scatter my thoughts in rough. It’s yet another in my current spate of movies I know I loved the last time I saw them but the fact is, “last time” is getting to be nearly a decade ago in some cases, lol, so I’m just checking. My bulletproof defence of this movie as an entry in my Top 100 list, and a good place to start, is that, hey, if you’re gonna make a list of the best movies ever, you have to have a Marilyn Monroe movie in there; and while this movie ain’t exactly Marilyn (that would be Some Like It Hot, if you wanna go in that direction), it is without a doubt the best work she did.
[...] It’s not a movie I could watch with any real frequency, there’s too much here, it could drive a person crazy, as I said earlier there are so many ways to view it and take it in, it’s the kind of movie it would take me a whole fan commentary to cover fully; but there is simply no other movie like it, the use of sound is completely arresting, it takes my breath away, the range of creative ideas almost rivals Citizen Kane, and I’d be a fool not to force it into my top 100 list. If anyone else out there has been holding off a repeat viewing like I was, trust me: now’s the time. [...]
