Dare I say … Awesome!?
This had a lot of potential, and I’m pleased to say it didn’t fall entirely short of the expectations I got from the trailer. Though the animation outside of the monsters and the turtles themselves here veers somewhere between a slightly dodgy imitation of Pixar’s Incredibles style way down to Bratz/Barbie style TV-knock-offs (and why the hell have they made Splinter look like Puss in Boots from Shrek 2 lol?), the turtles themselves and the set-pieces are sometimes pretty damn amazing. There’s a fight between Leonardo and Raphael midway in the rain that actually slightly blew my mind, I forgot that they weren’t men in suits for a second, it’s really a tour-de-force of computer animation as far as I’m concerned.
The trailer had that wonderful moment where the stupid one (I used to be a huge fan of them, but I forget which is which now, lol) loses his footing on the rooftops of the New York City and it was at that point in the trailer where my expectation went from, “well it looks astounding, but it could never be like it was when I was 10 …” to, “this could be amazing.” Sadly, that part on the rooftops isn’t in here, and neither is there much humour in the whole thing at all, aside from the usual groaner one-liners, (“And I thought girlscouts were pushy!”) Sure, the story is, quite surprisingly considering its target audience, not a retread, and we’re dealing with the turtles long past their prime battling Shredder (though it sounds like he may return in a sequel … fine with me!) – and part of me kind of loved this approach – but y’know, would it kill you to throw in a few more cowabungas and awesomes? In fact … did I even hear a single Cowabunga in here? I actually don’t recall one 
But like I said, it’s not entirely a failure – I’ll be more than happy to watch the next one if it happens. It is really worth it for the Leo/Raphael fight alone … truly a showstopper.
