Had to watch this after “discovering” The Polyphonic Spree over the weekend and learning they did the soundtrack following Elliot Smith’s death (I was pleasantly surprised to find some of his songs made the cut too, though). This is familiar quirky indie stuff. I kind of kept thinking it might take off in the manner of a Cronenberg movie, like when Keanu Reeves says dramatically, “are you ready to say goodbye to your thumb?” But no, this is more a subdued Napoleon Dynamite or Bubble Boy with a really simple, perhaps too simple, message. There’s nothing wrong with it, and the music is fab … but it’s just not particularly interesting.
