The Thomas Crown Affair [1968]
As expected, this unfortunately didn’t grab me nearly as much as the nineties remake (and believe me, I wanted it to). I continue to have an unexplained prejudice against Steve McQueen, and a bunch of colourful filters and chopped up images on the screen doesn’t really constitute “style” for me. I even think the title song “Windmills of Your Mind” – which is a great, great song by Michel Legrand (whose score is the best thing this movie has going) and Marilyn/Alan Bergman – is horribly sung by Noel Harrison.
I honestly wanted to be surprised by this movie, have my expectation of a typical 60s “Classic” (those movies people who never watch movies refer to as Classics, I mean – cough Great Escape cough Magnificent Seven excuse me) be proven wrong, but I’d take the remake any day over this – it’s so much sexier and fun.
