Maybe I’m being too harsh, but to me this was just Donnie Darko meets American History X with all the energy sucked out. Fans of this movie will probably say I didn’t get it, and they’re probably right, but more than that, it’s probably simply one of those cases of, depends which movie you saw first. There’s actually a shot midway of Jena Malone and Ryan Gosling walking down a street and for a brief second I really couldn’t tell whether I was watching DD or not, lol, it’s uncanny.

To be honest, I kind of had the feeling that anything I watched today would fail to impress me, but quite honestly, I don’t think this would appeal to me any other day either. The ending is quite moving, but the rest of it is just too, too slow and lifeless for me to care.
