I read a couple of reviews that expressed annoyance at how this movie was marketed as a horror movie but turned out to be a thriller. For most of the movie, I sort of shared this feeling, but ultimately I think it’s pretty clever as it works with the theme of the movie and puts you in Kate Hudson’s shoes. For a long time you’re going along thinking “when is something weird going to happen? is this stuff really just all in people’s heads?” exactly like she is. It’s hard to say anymore without spoiling the ending, which is simply brilliant, nearly got me as bad as my first viewing of The Sixth Sense but basically it’s at the end when the movie is undeniably in the horror genre and you’re there with Hudson sort of wishing it could just be a thriller again.
This movie has a terrific cast – already mentioned Kate Hudson, Gena Rowlands, a practically mute John Hurt, and Peter Sarsgaard. This is pretty much the entire cast of characters, so if you were thinking the big twist ending is “whodunnit?” like I was for a disappointing moment midway, you’re mistaken – that’d be far too easy. I was genuinely surprised by this movie and I’ll definitely be watching it a couple more times again.
