The Servant

The Servant

Well here’s something different. What struck me most about this movie was how abruptly it ended. I think it was because the blatant gay subtext seemed so obvious to me that I expected it to build into a physical scene, Bogarde and Fox getting passionate or something – I assumed there’d be something like this ‘cos apparently the movie was “shocking” in its time (1963). So around the 90 minute mark, I was half tuned out thinking, it’s a while till the big climax comes. So my lacklustre reaction to this movie is basically due to expecting something completely different. This is an extremely subdued movie, extremely psychological, made more like a play than a movie – great direction, great lighting, great acting, thin story, deep subtext(s). But yes, it’s boring. Unsettling at times, darkly funny at others, one I could quite comfortably have on in the background instead of reality TV or soaps… but no especially special.
