The Serpent’s Egg
I didn’t expect a lot from this one, a rare venture into English-speaking cinema from Bergman. Carradine and Ullmann are great; it has some freaky moments; but ultimately it’s very forgettable. In my mind it will eventually become a blur, some strange lo-budget blending of Orson Welles’ The Trial and Marathon Man. Again I feel compelled to point out the BBFC’s certification of the movie: it’s an 18, I have no idea why. The cover art of the edition I rented makes it out (to my eyes) to be a kind of seedy horror movie like Witchfinder General or something, I do seriously wonder if that has something to do with the certificate. The transfer on this DVD was abysmal too, and I rarely care about picture quality (I rarely use the word abysmal, too, incidentally). There’s a more recent MGM DVD that also features a David Carradine commentary, sounds good, I hope they fixed the picture quality too, ‘cos I’d be willing to give this movie another shot.
