The acting’s not great, the framing device is hokey, the photography pretty damn flat. But this movie is still somehow a classic, from Mark Knopfler and Willy De Ville’s music to the endlessly quotable lines (“As you wish!” “Inconceivable!” and, of course, “You killed my father: prepare to die.”) It’s not the kind of movie I can easily lose myself in or get devastatingly emotional over, but I can’t imagine the rest of my life without watching it every now and then. William Goldman’s screenplay is brilliant. I hope one day to read the novel it came from.
