The Mothman Prophecies
This movie just didn’t engage me at all. It actually reminded me of the Keanu Reeves/James Spader movie I saw last year called The Watcher. It’s slick, to be sure, even maybe has a decent concept behind it, but it mopes along slow as molasses, never truly grabbing any attention. I just didn’t care how it turned out. As I said to Sarah, I noticed it’s based on a true story, which could explain the dullness.
In the end, it’s a lot like the Japanese movie The Eye, which I loved – a background of visions foreseeing disasters culminates in big disaster for main character – but this one takes far too many turns to reach its slightly gripping climax, and the characters are practically non-existent.
One thing that really surprised me in this movie was the cast. Laura Linney and Alan Bates both put in an appearance and it’s to their credit that they come out unscathed (Alan Bates in particular made me realise I need to see more of his movies, I’ve only seen Whistle Down the Wind so far and that alone made hime one of my favourite actors). Richard Gere, meanwhile … I’m ever more convinced that one day he should portray George W. Bush in a movie about our times lol.
