The Mexican
Loved this movie. It’s kind of funny watching it after seeing Pirates of the Caribbean (which Gore Verbinski also later directed), it was really such a no brainer to have Verbinski at the helm of that movie. The Mexican of the title is an infamous pistol rumoured to be cursed. Verbinski treats it a lot like the medallion in Pirates (I caught myself wondering how cool a Verbinski Lord of the Rings could have been too while watching this, he has that way of imbuing a static object with power – the tape in The Ring is, I guess, another example).
There’s just a whole ton of things that are unexpected and refreshing about this movie. Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts in less-annoying mode, Alan Silvestri turns in a very catchy Morricone-ish score, and James Gandolfini is priceless in his role as a gay kidnapper who befriends the kidnapped Roberts. One I’ll probably rent or buy on DVD at some point for the extras.
