The Martins
Oh. My. F*cking. God. Lee Evans just became one of my favourite actors. Between his performance here and his performance in last year’s Freeze Frame, I’m sold. This is an amazing movie … painful at times, morally awkward … but the attention to detail and realism is exactly as I like it. It’s essentially the story of a very lower class British family and the father who does whatever he can to give them “the holiday of a lifetime” (on the Isle of Man).
I’ve kind of known (either fortunately or unfortunately, I sometimes can’t decide) a handful of people from this kind of world, and to me, this movie is so important because no other movie I can think of paints their picture so sympathetically. The score is especially notable for the way it lifts every image. Composer Richard Hartley did the same for The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, I’ll be looking out for his name in future. Easily one of the best British movies I’ve ever seen.
