The Man Who Sued God
A wee bit of slightly half-hearted silliness that probably should’ve starred John Cleese or one of the remaining Pythons at some point but works surprisingly well with Billy Connolly pretty much playing himself (he’s certainly better and more believable as a romantic lead than you’d expect). It doesn’t really accomplish anything – duh, it’s just a little comedy, what would you expect? – but it has a damn good time wagging its finger at the world’s little ridiculousnesses.
I’m almost inclined to agree with an IMDb reviewer who says the ending is a major cop-out, as if the screenwriter came up with a really great question but suddenly realised he couldn’t answer it – but that moment with the cockatoo coming through the court window really caught me offguard and is really quite extraordinary. I mean, how do you end this story if not this way? It’s fast-paced and really nicely scored, and I’ll definitely watch it again. Also look out for Emily Browning pre-Lemony Snicket ... she’s so gorgeous it’s untrue, and one of the most natural young performances I’ve ever seen, though she’s not onscreen nearly enough, lol.
