I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I expected a non-eventful Bergman dramedy, almost a filler between his better known works, but I found it extremely interesting, extremely funny, and a little haunting. Max Von Sydow’s performance is fascinating. It bears resemblance to the later Persona, which I watched yesterday, the attempts of the shakable to shake the unshakable silent ‘hero’. I’d watch this again, it’s one of those foreign language movies where you barely even need the subtitles to have a good time. I’m categorising it as horror because to me it was more creepy than it was funny or moving. Even more creepy than Bergman’s ‘proper’ horror, Hour of the Wolf.
