The Island

The Island 4 star

I sat down to this thinking it was about time to watch something brainless and also thinking it would at least be better than director Michael Bay’s last abomination, Pearl Harbor. Little did I expect he would redeem himself entirely in my eyes with his best film since The Rock. And as to brainless, I couldn’t have been further from the truth (excepting maybe a few little things that annoyed me, like, say, why the windshield of a $500,000 car in 2019 can’t resist a little gunfire …)

It’s basically Gattaca, The Matrix, and Logan’s Run (mostly that one) with perhaps a little Frankenstein thrown in for good measure. The production design is glorious and the visual effects flawless, including at least one of many car chases to rival that seen in the climax of Matrix Reloaded.

The less you know about this movie, the better the ride, I think, so I hope I didn’t give away too much by my comparisons in the last paragraph. I really enjoyed this movie.
