The Hudsucker Proxy
Ahh, haven’t seen this one in years. Fargo of course remains the “best” Coen Brothers movie in my opinion, but this one has a huge place in my heart as my personal favourite. I think the fact I was giggling like a child and feeling generally toasty inside before the “you know – for kids” line (which I’d bizarrely forgotten about entirely, in addition to the entire subplot that follows) and the introduction of Jennifer Jason Leigh kinda says it all. It amazes me it was nominated for exactly zero Oscars – I mean production design, costume and score are simply no brainers, and I’d include Robbins, Leigh and Newman too not to mention the screenplay and cinematography. Best of all, it leaves you wanting to check out its influences, the great Howard Hawks comedies like (most of all) His Girl Friday and Bringing Up Baby – Jennifer Jason Leigh nails the Katherine Hepburn thing arguably better than Cate Blanchett did in The Aviator. This movie is simply a treasure.

I think O Brother would just edge it out at the last, but Hudsucker is definitely near the top of my fave Coen film list. It’s such fun!
