The Hoax

The Hoax 3 star

First of all, I’ve gotta say how good a double bill this makes with Orson Welles’ F for Fake ... and I wouldn’t have thought so, like I said in my review of that movie, I didn’t know that it touched on the same story as this one. And like F for Fake, it’s certainly an interesting ride, albeit not quite so much fun.

Richard Gere is pretty good, and he certainly looks the part; Carter Burwell’s music and the soundtrack awesome. I can’t help but feel it should’ve been better though. Again like F for Fake, I guess it comes down to the fact that it leaves you, as arguably it should, with the same feeling as any fake, hoax, ruse, or scam – even though you’re behind the scenes and in on the deal at every turn, in the end, it just all feels a little empty and, basically, wrong. It doesn’t make for particularly fulfilling viewing, it has to be said, but I also have to admit, my interest in this whole story is still merely in gestation.
