The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things

The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things 3 star

I don’t know quite what to say about this one except that, surprisingly, it almost lives up to its brilliant title. It’s kind of a sicker, seedier Tideland (if that’s at all possible, lol) meets Mysterious Skin. In the end it kind of loses its way, but it has to be said that it’s made well enough to unsettle someone quite beyond unsettling, and that’s more than most movies can claim. More than anything, in fact, it probably reminded me of Lukas Moodysson’s Lilya 4-ever or A Hole in My Heart ... it’s powerfully made stuff on a powerful theme; but, ultimately, I really don’t know if I could bring myself to watch it again – much as a second viewing is probably necessary to fully appreciate it.

I can totally understand. I left the theater shaking after seeing Lilya 4-Ever. It just blows me away that if I can feel that from just watching the movie. How unimaginable it must be in real life. I shudder to thinking about it…. but am thankful that such movies are made.
