The Girl Next Door
Amazingly, I found myself really enjoying this movie. Don’t be taken in by the marketing telling people this is like another American Pie or Eurotrip etc (the DVD is an “Unseen!” unrated type of deal…) This thing really has a great story and real feeling behind it. It reminded me of Kevin Smith’s Chasing Amy in a way. The groundwork of the story is pure male fantasy, it just wouldn’t happen. But everything else that builds up around that story, and everything that happens because of it, is absolutely real. But it also reminded me of a Jodie Foster movie called Stealing Home ... the kid Matthew is so innocent at the start of the movie, and Danielle is the older soul waking him to life, but they end up informing each other’s lives in many other ways.
Special mention to Timothy Olyphant: he became my god in this movie, can’t wait to see him in (hopefully similar) other roles, he’s brilliantly insane. I love the wide angle shot of him telling Matthew to get in the car towards the end. Scary guy.
