I think by now anybody who’s managed to both avoid spoilers and not see this movie is probably hard to find but I’ll still try to avoid giving too much away. I just watched the movie for a second time on DVD and I still really love it.

Critics of the movie seem to have expected something more from it. I kind of don’t understand this – it’s a killer concept, even before you get to the major twist halfway through. A woman is informed that the nine years of memories she has of her recently deceased son are but a fabrication. All I needed a year or so ago was that little synopsis and the information that Julianne Moore, one of the best actresses in the world today, would be playing that woman, and it was already a must-see. I mean, the initial situation is grief piled upon a grief, and no actress can do grief like Moore.

In any other hands, this movie would be every bit is ridiculous as its concept; populated by this cast, however (also featuring Anthony Edwards, Gary Sinise, and Dominic West – I love the scene where he finally remembers his own child), I find it to be a perfect thriller. Throw in some serious shocks (car crash, summary abductions) and freaky special effects, and honestly, from the concept, they couldn’t have reached a better result.
