The Fog
Thought I’d seen this one before for some reason. For some reason I was under the impression it was a fairly slow, artsy kind of thing with the fog being some intangible entity that basically frightens people. I don’t know what movie I was thinking of, I never realised there were things in the fog. I doubt very much that I’m the first to say it, though it feels like it, but this movie turns out to be quite surprisingly similar to Pirates of the Caribbean, with a bunch of ghosts coming back to terrorise the inhabitants of a sleepy seaside village demanding the return of some gold that was stolen many years before.
With the majority of cast and crew returning from ‘78’s Halloween, comparison is inevitable and John Carpenter conjures up the same suspense here as he did there with steadicam shots and minimalist score. The fog effect is pretty mind-boggling. I don’t know how they did it in this year’s remake ‘cos I haven’t seen it or even a trailer yet, but I’m guessing CGI, which obviously wasn’t available in 1980. Those scenes must’ve been pretty tough to shoot and they all come out seriously creepy. I kinda wish I’d saved this one for the Halloween marathon.
