The Five Obstructions
This is a great look at the creative process. Lars Von Trier challenges another film maker to remake a short film from decades ago, several times, with various “obstructions”: for example, no take can be longer than 12 frames; it must be made in Cuba; you can’t use any sets; it must be a cartoon. It’s like the Dogme thing taken to the ultimate extreme. If you love movies and if you either love or loathe reality television, this should make you happy. I love the delight with which Lars sets the obstructions, even when speaking about heavy matters. His version of the movie, the last obstruction being that the film maker does nothing but be credited, is the best, and ends the movie on a typically profound Von Trier note.
