The Fisher King

The Fisher King 5 star

It’s about time I had a new favourite movie and I think this has to be the one. I may have only seen this once before but it really stuck with me that first time and I’ve been dying to see it again for years. But I’d forgotten the whole thing about the shooting at the beginning; I’d forgotten just how heavy Robin Williams’ character gets in places; how the cute and quirky romance completely overwhelms both this and the fantasy elements which I remembered as being much more prominent. I love movies that go to extremes and this one goes way to the end of both ends of the spectrum – from the fireworks ending and the dance sequence in Grand Central Station through the cutesiness of Amanda Plummer and Williams’ romance, right down to the anguished performances from both Williams and Jeff Bridges over the shooting incident. I also love movies that remain real in spite of the odd places they might go, and this one’s raw as hell when it needs to be.
