I don’t know if it’s just the way I was brought up with this movie – if it wasn’t one of those infamous Channel 4 red triangle movies, then it certainly had the same “naughty naughty, turn down the telly so mum doesn’t hear you,” mystique about it to me as a kid; the kind of movie you’d flick through the Radio Times at Christmas, see the words “contains nudity”, record it, and then use the wonder of fast-forward till you saw some bosoms or gasp other girl parts lol.

Anyway, I don’t know if it’s that, but I don’t know if I’ll ever really be able to see this movie as more than some kind of exploitation flick – which, I know, is probably a huge insult to it. The insanity seems to erupt all too quickly for my liking, and not meaning to sound too prudish, the sex stuff really does feel too gratuitous at times, even though the story of course mostly calls for it. Oliver Reed, however, is certainly at his best, as is Vanessa Redgrave; and some of the images, including the final shot, are pretty breathtaking.
