The Devil Wears Prada

The Devil Wears Prada 4 star

Things I came to this movie with … first, I kinda have a similar awkward kneejerk reaction to Anne Hathaway as I do to Scarlett Johansson these days. It’s fairly unexplained, I wanna say I hate everything of hers outside the “Princess Diaries” series except then I remember she was ok in Brokeback Mountain ... it might be something to do with the way she is “in real life” ... I don’t know. Anyway there’s that. That and it really looked a lot to me like Swimming with Sharks with girl girls. And the fact that I felt like I’d seen the movie already through the promo materials I couldn’t avoid.

No matter. The movie has parts of all the problems (if they’re problems, I can’t decide) above and my attention was able too easily to drift to other things at numerous points. But it has its good points too. Meryl Streep actually is good – ie. she actually excels herself in places rather than being predictably brilliant as always – not quite the megabitch I was expecting (going back to the Swimming with Sharks deal I thought this would be) but just cold, dead, and lonely creepiness. But for me the main reason to watch the movie is in the support of Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt. Both are fantastic and between them are on the screen for plenty of the movie to make it worthwhile. I’ll actually probably watch it again just for Blunt alone.
