The Da Vinci Code

The Da Vinci Code 3 star

Well, whaddya know, exactly as I expected. Though I’ve not read the book (oooooOOooh, sue me), I found myself recommending this movie to no less than three people on its release, because I knew that with Ron Howard in charge, with the team he gathers, and from what I’d heard about the source material, that it’d be a sure-fire, slick, easily watchable thriller. I expected as much myself, and though I knew it wouldn’t be up to the hype, I didn’t think I’d be disappointed. Ron Howard’s a great craftsman and though he doesn’t get particularly personal, y’know, there’s a place for his kind of cinema, especially in these days of one-tracked, mind-numbing celebrations of product-placement and false beauty. But despite all that, I’ve gotta admit, I did find myself slightly disappointed. The score, cinematography and editing stand out above all else, and all else is practically perfect in every way … but it’s all so predictable (seriously, I shook my head and prayed that I hadn’t guessed the ending as soon as the “the Holy Grail is a person?” bomb was dropped, but alas, I had) and reliable and solid and all those pretty, nasty, boring, average words; and all the talkiness at the end brings it down by a whole star on my system.

Gimme a triple bill of Kevin Smith’s Dogma, Hannibal and The Ninth Gate any day (sounds like a weird combo but they were the main movies that came to my mind while watching this). I’m amazed to say it, but I doubt I’ll go near this movie again. It’s the very definition of average, and even in my completely disinterested mind (regarding “The Da Vinci Code”) it should’ve been so much more.
