This one worked on me the same way the director’s previous work, City of God, did. It’s spectacularly made, beautifully shot, scored, performed, and everything, but while people are praising it and showering it with awards etc, I find it mostly standard. It has a nifty ending, and the most impressive thing to me was the prosthetic pregnancy on Rachel Weisz in two scenes of the movie. Apparently she was not really pregnant, but you really wouldn’t know.
