The Cat in the Hat
I have to say that, though ultimately this nearly ranks among the 10 worst movies of all time even on my big movie list, I really didn’t find it quite as awful as just about everyone else who’s seen it seemed to find it. My being a huge fan of Dakota Fanning right now probably has something to do with it, but there’s a lot of other stuff that make this movie worth checking out at least once. I found myself laughing a hell of a lot, and ironically it was only when Mike Myers, the big star of the movie, was onscreen that I got that “holy god this is really, painfully bad” feeling in my stomach. The production design, make-up and music, etc, are very much in keeping with The Grinch, which shares the same producer (Brian Grazer) as here, and there’s some neat lines (scattered sparingly among a lot of bad stuff, I’ve gotta say).
The DVD has more features than you’d expect – even a director’s commentary I look forward to hearing. The outtakes are fun, Dakota Fanning is always interesting in her interviews, and there’s behind-the-scenes featurettes detailing some bizarrely painstaking work that was done to bring Dr. Seuss’ book to the screen (even in the music department – they actually made new instruments for the purpose…. some people are just crazy…).
It might seem weird of me to give 2 stars to a movie so low down in my ranking… basically, knock off one star if you don’t like or have no interest in Dakota Fanning, ‘cos for me she’s always worth an extra one. Alec Baldwin is great too though, he’ll be worth a whole extra star to some too. Alright I’m babbling.
