The Brown Bunny

The Brown Bunny 2 stars

I’m kind of hurting and confused about how little A Brown Bunny engaged my attention. I really didn’t think it would be as bad as I’d read. I adored Vincent Gallo’s Buffalo ‘66: in fact, I think it’s a masterpiece and the second greatest all-round filmmaker’s debut after Citizen Kane. I’d love to have just an ounce of Gallo’s confidence, and Brown Bunny reminded me of that in its first two shots, of motorcycle’s riding round and round a track, an image that would never otherwise have engaged me. But it’s fast downhill from there.

I thought I might at least have a personal response to it, even while understanding the reasons people may have for hating it. But after an incredibly sweet opening (with another movie character called Violet! whoo! lol), it really and truly goes nowhere, and ultimately convinces me that Gallo is only out to annoy people, and make fans of people who take pleasure in pretending not to be annoyed like the majority in order to feel superior (I know this type of person because I have been this type of person, and I probably will be again). I’m really bummed by my disappointment on this one. It’s a shame that the guy who rescued Christina Ricci from Disney movies is now probably gonna be remembered for “the Chloe Sevigny blow job scene” (which, by the way, really isn’t at all sexy – but then who am I to talk, I fancy underage CG characters, lol). I hope he tries again and makes another Buffalo, but I seem to remember him selling his whole rig for this one on eBay, which doesn’t inspire a lot of hope. But then, he’s the kind of guy who I still believe could make beauty with the crappiest of video cameras, so I’ll hold on for you to come back, Vincent.

2 stars might seem weird considering the near complete absence of positive things I have to say about the movie – but I can’t express how much I loved Gallo’s debut, and I guess I’m just hoping that I missed something here. I’ll watch it again probably later in the year when I rewatch Buffalo ‘66.
