The Amazing Mr. Blunden
It’ll take me at least another viewing to decide if I really love this movie as much as some – right now I’m still a bigger fan of director Lionel Jeffries’ other, later children’s fantasy The Water Babies – but all in all, this is certainly as memorable, unique and charming as I’d heard. And the ending really gives The Bad Seed a run for its money as one of the most jarringly bizarre I’ve ever seen. Triple bill it either way – with the similarly themed The Innocents and The Others, or just with Lionel Jeffries’ other noted works, the aforementioned Water Babies and The Railway Children. The atmosphere really reminded me of Picnic at Hanging Rock for some reason, too. Elmer Bernstein’s music is, as always, beautiful.

[...] 1. No more beer – I made it to 10 days then I started again and didn’t stop, lol. Let’s put it this way … I’m working on it … 2. No more shopping where I work. Again, I tried, but failed. I am shopping less there, though, that’s for sure … in fact I think I’ve probably only been down there once a week so far. 3. One new movie a day (ie. new to me). Check! 4. Old movies. Sadly, the oldest I’ve watched was The Amazing Mr. Blunden … I’ll do better on this one. 5. 100 albums, 100 movies. Kinda inapplicable really, ‘cos there’s never much out this time of year. I’ve listened to Carly Simon’s “Into White” and I have “The Good, the Bad, and The Queen” lined up for Saturday night, but it’s really too soon to tell how I’m gonna do on this. 6 MY STUFF. I haven’t actually sat in front of the keyboard and mic nearly enough, but I have written two new songs, which is better than nothing. 7. Learn to draw. Blah. I drew one thing, lol. But, again, better than nothing. 8. (at least start to) Learn a new language. Haven’t touched any of those podcasts, mp3s or books, but I did watch a French movie today, refreshing my existing second language, so, err, again, better than nothing? [...]
