That Night

That Night 4 star

Surprisingly effective melodrama – it got me tearing up more than once, anyway. There’s something about movies set in the 60s with 80s-style synth music (even though this one came out in the early 90s) that for some bizarre reason just works, and this would play well alongside stuff like Dirty Dancing, Stealing Home, Mermaids, and the later movie Now & Then definitely owes something to this one or the novel it’s based on. It’s worth watching to see Eliza Dushku and Katherine Heigl in their big screen debuts, too, and Juliette Lewis delivers one of her better performances here as well. The ending is beautiful, I’m glad I had the DVD recorder running while watching this, since bizarrely it’s really hard to find these days.
