That Darn Cat! [1997]

That Darn Cat! [1997] 3 star

I must be going to every conceivable hell for watching this for the umpteenth time when I still haven’t seen the Hayley Mills original, lol, my excuse here I was making room on the Sky+ box, but really, what can I say? This one still makes me seriously laugh out loud and I don’t care what anyone says about Vincent Gallo “rescuing” Christina Ricci from Disney, I love her almost as much here as I do in his Buffalo ‘66, and in my opinion she’s done way worse than this (*Bless the Child*, Cursed) since.

Doug E. Doug basically delivers a performance that couldn’t more clearly say, “uh, we wanted Eddie Murphy or Chris Rock, but, y’know …” – but again, y’know what? He does that routine a lot better than some actors would. Add the support of the likes of John Ratzenberger, Peter Boyle, Dean Jones, Dyan Cannon and Estelle Parsons to name just a few – not to mention the fact it’s directed by sitcom legend Bob Spiers and written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood, Larry Flynt and Man on the Moon) – and for a straight to video Disney remake, I think this one really deserves a lot more respect than it’s been given. That or I’m just trying to justify the hundreds of hours I wasted watching this in my teenage years, lol. Either way, I love it.
