Sylvia 4 star

This movie’s thunder was sort of stolen by the similar tale of a tortured artist The Hours that came out a year earlier but it’s definitely worth a look for the performances by Gwyneth Paltrow and Daniel Craig and Gabriel Yared’s soaring score. I’m amazed by the lack of attention this movie got, not just awards-wise, but generally.

In addition to The Hours, I’d add Girl, Interrupted and The End of the Affair to the list of movies this one resembles. It is a very depressing movie, that’s for sure – I’d actually go so far as to say this is the first movie that has ever left me feeling emotionally dead as the post-scripts and end credits began to roll, and it took a while for me to get my real world bearings back. But on technical grounds alone, this one really deserves to be seen and I wouldn’t hesitate too much myself to watch it again. I never saw how Gwyneth Paltrow deserved her Oscar for Shakespeare in Love, but between this and Proof alone she’s more than earned it since.
