Superman

Superman 4 star

I don’t know what it was, but this umpteenth viewing of this movie just hit me like it’s never hit me before. I really “got it” for the first time or something (I know, I know – what’s to “get” about Superman, right? – I don’t know how to explain it). In memory, the movie and all its sequels had become blurred in my mind and I was amazed by how many the most memorable scenes occured in this first installment. I was amazed that the performances were way better than I remembered, that the effects weren’t as dated as I remembered. It could be the most extreme simplification of the tried and true hero’s journey structure ever, but for some reason that and all the clichés didn’t bother me this time round. It’s a little clunky with age, but otherwise this is pretty perfect, and definitely Richard Donner’s best work (glances at the filmography hmm, maybe tied with The Omen).
