Supergirl
Boy does this have pride of place in the cheesy section of my DVD collection, lol. This is like the definition of the “so bad it’s good” movie … though, in fact, quite honestly, I think it’s pretty great in places too. Any movie is worth watching for a Jerry Goldsmith score, you get Faye Dunaway and Peter Cook (reminding me remarkably of Alan Rickman’s Snape this time around) hamming it up as the baddies, Peter O’Toole perfect as Zoltar (“On girl! YOU … CAN …!” lol), and I’m guessing you could probably put just about anybody in The Costume and it’d turn me on slightly but Helen Slater does it fine, despite some hideous acting.
Oh, and I mustn’t forget the great support – the familiar face of Marc McClure as Jimmy Olsen, Maureen Teefy as Lucy Lane, and possibly my favourite thing in the whole movie, Brenda Vaccaro as Bianca, Dunaway’s quirky sidekick (“Find out who she is!” “Well, sure, but, I gotta tell you, I think I recognise the costume!”).
It is an awful, awful movie, don’t get me wrong … not to mention something I noticed just this time around, the fact that it actually makes no sense whatsoever, not only within the Superman universe, but even within its own, lol (I even hear the 24 minutes extra in the director’s cut, which I must now get my hands on, doesn’t help) ... but there is simply so much in it, it makes so many movies, even great ones, look positively empty by comparison, and I’m glad I got it on DVD, even though it’s taken me a while to even remove it from its case, lol.
