Hehe, I kinda loved this and really didn’t expect to. I turned very early on when there’s a really fake looking shot of a couple of seagulls who turn their heads as a motorcycle chase passes them and, even despite its fakeness, it just made me giggle for reasons unknown and I just transformed into a little kid and knew I was gonna enjoy it from then on. The movie resembles, obviously, a young James Bond, there’s an element of Harry Potter too which the movie nicely namechecks (“So what’s this place? Hogwarts?”) … mostly it’s the British Agent Cody Banks … well, that is, Cody Banks 2: Destination London
– and where that movie had British has-been Hannah Spearitt, we get American has-been Alicia Silverstone (using ‘has-been’ in the wonderfully positive William Shatner sense, of course), and the similarities don’t end there. The style reminded me of Robert Rodriguez’ Spy Kids series too. The cast is brilliant from a fleeting Ewan McGregor (really, don’t see it just ‘cos you’re a fan of his, lol, it’s truly, truly fleeting) to Bill Nighy, Jimmy Carr, Robbie Coltrane, Sophie Okonedo, Mickey Rourke, Andy Serkis and a frighteningly older Sarah Bolger (one of the little girls from In America). Then there’s Stephen Fry, who will make the year of anyone who misses the Q scene from this year’s Bond movie – where better to house the gadgets guy of the teenage 007? Hamley’s of course!
