Stander

Stander 4 star

I loved Bronwyn Hughes’ first two movies, Harriet the Spy and Forces of Nature, so I’ve been looking forward to seeing this, her latest, for quite some time. It’s not as slick and bouncy as those two movies, but nor should it be as this is a far more grown-up affair. Thomas Jane plays a cop turned bank robber – it’s more simply told than I expected, but very compelling and the performances, particularly Jane’s, are solid. As I said, it’s not as colourful as Hughes’ previous movies, and it was that aspect I loved about her style, but there are still some arresting visuals, like the series of opening shots or a scene in which one of Stander’s accomplices shoots up the stained-glass ceiling of one of the banks they’re robbing. Funky score, too.
