Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams
Here’s why I loved this movie the last time I watched it: it’s all in the ending. Steve Buscemi is great in his role as the slightly crazy scientist, and the ending belongs to him, realising the true relationship between himself and his creations etc, combined with the great staple of the Spy Kids trilogy, the family message, “You saved us, why?” “Because you are family.” Combined with some beautiful music.
But watching this this time, I just had it mostly in the background. It didn’t grab me as much as Part 1, at all. Emily Osment (Haley Joel’s sister) is great as Gertie Giggles, as is Matt O’Leary as Gary Giggles, and all the other supporting cast. All the acting is great. The film making is great, showing all the creativity with a smaller-than-average Hollywood budget than usual. But that je-ne-sais-quoi is missing, what else can I say. I love Robert Rodriguez. And I loved this movie… but I want better from him now. This was a cheap shot.
