Spider-Man 2
Hmm, don’t know why I didn’t review this the first time I watched it. We had a barbecue that day, I remember, perhaps I got drunk.
Anyway – also, why was this way down at number 50 on my movies of 2004 list, lol? It just shot up over Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, for the record (only just, mind).
This series makes my heart pound, big time. I can’t even think of any other movies that do it to such an extent. Maybe Spirit and Tarzan. The combo of Danny Elfman’s score and the sweeping shots of Spidey swinging through the streets of NYC simply turn my body into a vibrator or something.
Like the first movie, this one kind of takes a little dive towards the end in a rushed final 10 minutes, the whole “new Green Goblin” set-up is pretty much entirely unnecessary and distracting. It recovers for Kirsten Dunst’s killer last line, though.
What’s most amazing about this movie is the number of levels it touches in such a (relatively) short running length. There’s barely a scene where I don’t have a tear in the corner of my eye ready to roll. And all this heavy subject matter is balanced by some great humour (indeed, in one of the movie’s funniest moments for me, Peter Parker even says to MJ, “This is heavy …”). Not to mention the stunning scene in which Sam Raimi lets his horror roots show through, as Doc Ock destroys the hospital staff. That scene is so wonderfully Evil Dead it can only a matter of time before someone greenlights a third sequel to that series, lol.
