Spectres
Though it’s really badly made in places – special effects in particular (they’re really pretty shamefully laughable) – I think I’m a little in love with this movie. Its tone reminded me of other low-budget ‘horror’ movies, like Paperhouse, Urban Ghost Story and last year’s 11:11, and it’s very very clever while at the same time being pretty moving. I think I just like that people still try to make these kinds of movies – not allowing their story to be overrun by the thrills, letting the emotions in, etc. And I also think it’s very brave when a filmmaker makes a movie like this even though they (evidently) can’t really afford to. It stars two Star Trek people, weirdly enough – Marina Sirtis (who has a really weird but non-distracting accent) and Linda Park (who just has to look pretty, concerned and motherly). The mother-daughter relationship is pretty realistic, though Sirtis’ character becomes even more extremely drawn than Nabokov’s Charlotte Haze towards the end, lol. I’m really pleased to look at the IMDb and see that the girl who plays the daughter is in Lucky McKee’s (May) next movie, The Woods. Very Thora Birch / Katherine Isabelle – ish. One I’ll definitely watch again.
